We are pleased to share an important milestone in the AMELIE project, which is developing a novel regenerative treatment for faecal incontinence.
To date, four patients have been treated at The Royal London Hospital in London, and two patients have been treated at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff as part of the ongoing clinical trial.
This marks a significant step forward in the evaluation of a new cell-based therapy that aims to restore sphincter function by using autologous skeletal muscle-derived cells attached to implantable microcarriers. The approach is designed to improve cell survival, support tissue repair, and ultimately improve continence outcomes for patients living with this challenging condition.
Each patient pathway begins with a muscle biopsy to collect the cells needed to manufacture the personalised therapy. These cells are then processed and prepared for implantation, before being delivered back to the patient at one of the participating clinical sites.
The treatment of these six patients represents a key milestone in the translation of AMELIE from laboratory development into clinical practice. It also reflects the close collaboration between surgeons, scientists, manufacturing teams, and clinical trial staff across the UK.
As the trial progresses, the team will continue carefully monitor outcomes to assess safety and early signs of effectiveness.
