Developing a stem cell therapy to repair brain injury related to preterm birth.<\/p>\n

PREMSTEM (The Brain Injury in the Premature Born Infant: Stem Cell Regeneration Research Network) brings together world-leading clinicians, researchers, patient advocacy organisations and an industry partner with expertise in neonatology and drug development.<\/div>\n
Each year, around 15 million babies worldwide are born preterm, before 37 weeks of pregnancy. Many are at risk of developing encephalopathy of prematurity, a form of brain injury for which there are currently no treatments that can repair the damage.<\/div>\n
The PREMSTEM consortium is investigating whether stem cells derived from donated umbilical cord tissue could provide a new regenerative therapy for this condition. The research is focused on three key questions: when treatment should be given, what dose is most effective, and whether stem cells should be delivered through the nose (intranasally) or into the bloodstream (intravenously).<\/div>\n
Alongside the development of the therapy, the project is creating affordable, easy-to-use imaging tools to help clinicians detect brain injury in preterm infants earlier and more accurately.<\/div>\n

O PREMSTEM (Les\u00f5es Cerebrais no Rec\u00e9m-Nascido Prematuro: Rede de Investiga\u00e7\u00e3o em Regenera\u00e7\u00e3o com C\u00e9lulas Estaminais) re\u00fane m\u00e9dicos, investigadores, organiza\u00e7\u00f5es de defesa dos doentes e um parceiro industrial de renome mundial, com experi\u00eancia em neonatologia e desenvolvimento de medicamentos. Todos os anos, cerca de 15 milh\u00f5es de beb\u00e9s em todo o mundo nascem prematuros, antes das 37 semanas de gravidez. Muitos correm o risco de desenvolver encefalopatia da prematuridade, uma forma de les\u00e3o cerebral para a qual n\u00e3o existem atualmente tratamentos capazes de reparar os danos. O cons\u00f3rcio PREMSTEM est\u00e1 a investigar se as c\u00e9lulas estaminais derivadas de tecido do cord\u00e3o umbilical doado poder\u00e3o constituir uma nova terapia regenerativa para esta condi\u00e7\u00e3o. A investiga\u00e7\u00e3o centra-se em tr\u00eas quest\u00f5es-chave: quando o tratamento deve ser administrado, qual a dose mais eficaz e se as c\u00e9lulas estaminais devem ser administradas pelo nariz (por via intranasal) ou na corrente sangu\u00ednea (por via intravenosa). A par do desenvolvimento da terapia, o projeto est\u00e1 a criar ferramentas de imagiologia acess\u00edveis e f\u00e1ceis de utilizar para ajudar os m\u00e9dicos a detetar les\u00f5es cerebrais em rec\u00e9m-nascidos prematuros de forma mais precoce e precisa.
