Developing a stem cell therapy to repair brain injury related to preterm birth.<\/p>\n

PREMSTEM (The Brain Injury in the Premature Born Infant: Stem Cell Regeneration Research Network) brings together world-leading clinicians, researchers, patient advocacy organisations and an industry partner with expertise in neonatology and drug development.<\/div>\n
Each year, around 15 million babies worldwide are born preterm, before 37 weeks of pregnancy. Many are at risk of developing encephalopathy of prematurity, a form of brain injury for which there are currently no treatments that can repair the damage.<\/div>\n
The PREMSTEM consortium is investigating whether stem cells derived from donated umbilical cord tissue could provide a new regenerative therapy for this condition. The research is focused on three key questions: when treatment should be given, what dose is most effective, and whether stem cells should be delivered through the nose (intranasally) or into the bloodstream (intravenously).<\/div>\n
Alongside the development of the therapy, the project is creating affordable, easy-to-use imaging tools to help clinicians detect brain injury in preterm infants earlier and more accurately.<\/div>\n

PROGETTI CORRELATI<\/h1><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>PREMSTEM: Sviluppo di una terapia a base di cellule staminali per il trattamento delle lesioni cerebrali correlate alla nascita pretermine. PREMSTEM (The Brain Injury in the Premature Born Infant: Stem Cell Regeneration Research Network) riunisce medici, ricercatori, organizzazioni di tutela dei pazienti di fama mondiale e un partner industriale con competenze nel campo della neonatologia e dello sviluppo di farmaci. Ogni anno, circa 15 milioni di bambini in tutto il mondo nascono prematuri, prima della 37\u00aa settimana di gravidanza. Molti di loro sono a rischio di sviluppare l\u2019encefalopatia da prematurit\u00e0, una forma di lesione cerebrale per la quale attualmente non esistono trattamenti in grado di riparare il danno. Il consorzio PREMSTEM sta studiando se le cellule staminali derivate dal tessuto del cordone ombelicale donato possano rappresentare una nuova terapia rigenerativa per questa patologia. La ricerca si concentra su tre questioni chiave: quando somministrare il trattamento, quale sia la dose pi\u00f9 efficace e se le cellule staminali debbano essere somministrate per via nasale (intranasale) o nel flusso sanguigno (per via endovenosa). Parallelamente allo sviluppo della terapia, il progetto sta realizzando strumenti di imaging economici e di facile utilizzo per aiutare i medici a individuare le lesioni cerebrali nei neonati prematuri in modo pi\u00f9 precoce e accurato.
