Developing a stem cell therapy to repair brain injury related to preterm birth.<\/p>\n

PREMSTEM (The Brain Injury in the Premature Born Infant: Stem Cell Regeneration Research Network) brings together world-leading clinicians, researchers, patient advocacy organisations and an industry partner with expertise in neonatology and drug development.<\/div>\n
Each year, around 15 million babies worldwide are born preterm, before 37 weeks of pregnancy. Many are at risk of developing encephalopathy of prematurity, a form of brain injury for which there are currently no treatments that can repair the damage.<\/div>\n
The PREMSTEM consortium is investigating whether stem cells derived from donated umbilical cord tissue could provide a new regenerative therapy for this condition. The research is focused on three key questions: when treatment should be given, what dose is most effective, and whether stem cells should be delivered through the nose (intranasally) or into the bloodstream (intravenously).<\/div>\n
Alongside the development of the therapy, the project is creating affordable, easy-to-use imaging tools to help clinicians detect brain injury in preterm infants earlier and more accurately.<\/div>\n

PREMSTEM (The Brain Injury in the Premature Born Infant : Stem Cell Regeneration Research Network) rassemble des cliniciens de renomm\u00e9e mondiale, des chercheurs, des associations de d\u00e9fense des patients et un partenaire industriel sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9 en n\u00e9onatologie et en d\u00e9veloppement de m\u00e9dicaments. Chaque ann\u00e9e, environ 15 millions de b\u00e9b\u00e9s naissent pr\u00e9matur\u00e9ment dans le monde, avant la 37e semaine de grossesse. Beaucoup d\u2019entre eux risquent de d\u00e9velopper une enc\u00e9phalopathie du pr\u00e9matur\u00e9, une forme de l\u00e9sion c\u00e9r\u00e9brale pour laquelle il n\u2019existe actuellement aucun traitement capable de r\u00e9parer les dommages. Le consortium PREMSTEM cherche \u00e0 d\u00e9terminer si les cellules souches issues de tissus du cordon ombilical donn\u00e9s pourraient constituer une nouvelle th\u00e9rapie r\u00e9g\u00e9n\u00e9rative pour cette affection. La recherche s\u2019articule autour de trois questions cl\u00e9s : \u00e0 quel moment le traitement doit-il \u00eatre administr\u00e9, quelle est la dose la plus efficace, et les cellules souches doivent-elles \u00eatre administr\u00e9es par voie nasale (intranasale) ou dans la circulation sanguine (intraveineuse) ? Parall\u00e8lement au d\u00e9veloppement de la th\u00e9rapie, le projet met au point des outils d\u2019imagerie abordables et faciles \u00e0 utiliser afin d\u2019aider les cliniciens \u00e0 d\u00e9tecter plus t\u00f4t et avec plus de pr\u00e9cision les l\u00e9sions c\u00e9r\u00e9brales chez les pr\u00e9matur\u00e9s.
