Nos complace compartir un hito importante del proyecto AMELIE, que est\u00e1 desarrollando un novedoso tratamiento regenerativo para la incontinencia fecal.

Hasta la fecha, se ha tratado a cuatro pacientes en el Royal London Hospital de Londres y a dos pacientes en el Hospital Universitario de Gales, en Cardiff, en el marco del ensayo cl\u00ednico en curso.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Esto supone un importante avance en la evaluaci\u00f3n de una nueva terapia celular cuyo objetivo es restablecer la funci\u00f3n del esf\u00ednter mediante el uso de c\u00e9lulas aut\u00f3logas derivadas del m\u00fasculo esquel\u00e9tico fijadas a microportadores implantables. Este enfoque est\u00e1 dise\u00f1ado para mejorar la supervivencia celular, favorecer la reparaci\u00f3n tisular y, en \u00faltima instancia, mejorar los resultados en materia de continencia de los pacientes que padecen esta dif\u00edcil afecci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n


El proceso de cada paciente comienza con una biopsia muscular para obtener las c\u00e9lulas necesarias para fabricar el tratamiento personalizado. A continuaci\u00f3n, estas c\u00e9lulas se procesan y se preparan para su implantaci\u00f3n, antes de ser reinyectadas al paciente en uno de los centros cl\u00ednicos participantes.<\/div>\n

El tratamiento de estos seis pacientes supone un hito clave en la transici\u00f3n de AMELIE desde el desarrollo en laboratorio a la pr\u00e1ctica cl\u00ednica. Adem\u00e1s, refleja la estrecha colaboraci\u00f3n entre cirujanos, cient\u00edficos, equipos de fabricaci\u00f3n y personal de ensayos cl\u00ednicos de todo el Reino Unido.<\/div>\n

A medida que avance el ensayo, el equipo seguir\u00e1 supervisando atentamente los resultados para evaluar la seguridad y los primeros indicios de eficacia.<\/div>\n

We are pleased to share an important milestone in the AMELIE project, which is developing a novel regenerative treatment for faecal incontinence. To date, four patients have been treated at The Royal London Hospital in London, and two patients have been treated at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff as part of the ongoing clinical trial. This marks a significant step forward in the evaluation of a new cell-based therapy that aims to restore sphincter function by using autologous skeletal muscle-derived cells attached to implantable microcarriers. The approach is designed to improve cell survival, support tissue repair, and ultimately improve continence outcomes for patients living with this challenging condition. Each patient pathway begins with a muscle biopsy to collect the cells needed to manufacture the personalised therapy. These cells are then processed and prepared for implantation, before being delivered back to the patient at one of the participating clinical sites. The treatment of these six patients represents a key milestone in the translation of AMELIE from laboratory development into clinical practice. The first patient was recently treated in the AMELIE clinical trial during April 2026. The team at The Royal London Hospital implanted healthy muscle cells attached to microscopic beads in humans for the first time. The study aims to treat faecal incontinence caused by childbirth injury.<\/span><\/p>\n

The first patients had been biopsied two weeks prior to this in Cardiff at the University Hospital of Wales.<\/p>\n

These are important milestones for the progression of this groundbreaking treatment. The team looks forward to treating the remaining patients enrolled in the trial in the coming months.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
