Developing a stem cell therapy to repair brain injury related to preterm birth.<\/p>\n

PREMSTEM (The Brain Injury in the Premature Born Infant: Stem Cell Regeneration Research Network) brings together world-leading clinicians, researchers, patient advocacy organisations and an industry partner with expertise in neonatology and drug development.<\/div>\n
Each year, around 15 million babies worldwide are born preterm, before 37 weeks of pregnancy. Many are at risk of developing encephalopathy of prematurity, a form of brain injury for which there are currently no treatments that can repair the damage.<\/div>\n
The PREMSTEM consortium is investigating whether stem cells derived from donated umbilical cord tissue could provide a new regenerative therapy for this condition. The research is focused on three key questions: when treatment should be given, what dose is most effective, and whether stem cells should be delivered through the nose (intranasally) or into the bloodstream (intravenously).<\/div>\n
Alongside the development of the therapy, the project is creating affordable, easy-to-use imaging tools to help clinicians detect brain injury in preterm infants earlier and more accurately.<\/div>\n

PROYECTOS RELACIONADOS<\/h1><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>PREMSTEM: Desarrollo de una terapia con c\u00e9lulas madre para reparar las lesiones cerebrales relacionadas con el parto prematuro. PREMSTEM (Lesiones cerebrales en el reci\u00e9n nacido prematuro: Red de Investigaci\u00f3n sobre Regeneraci\u00f3n con C\u00e9lulas Madre) re\u00fane a m\u00e9dicos, investigadores y organizaciones de defensa de los pacientes l\u00edderes a nivel mundial, as\u00ed como a un socio industrial con experiencia en neonatolog\u00eda y desarrollo de f\u00e1rmacos. Cada a\u00f1o, alrededor de 15 millones de beb\u00e9s en todo el mundo nacen prematuramente, antes de las 37 semanas de gestaci\u00f3n. Muchos corren el riesgo de desarrollar encefalopat\u00eda del prematuro, una forma de lesi\u00f3n cerebral para la que actualmente no existen tratamientos capaces de reparar el da\u00f1o. El consorcio PREMSTEM est\u00e1 investigando si las c\u00e9lulas madre derivadas de tejido del cord\u00f3n umbilical donado podr\u00edan ofrecer una nueva terapia regenerativa para esta afecci\u00f3n. La investigaci\u00f3n se centra en tres cuestiones clave: cu\u00e1ndo debe administrarse el tratamiento, qu\u00e9 dosis es m\u00e1s eficaz y si las c\u00e9lulas madre deben administrarse por v\u00eda nasal (intranasal) o en el torrente sangu\u00edneo (por v\u00eda intravenosa). Paralelamente al desarrollo de la terapia, el proyecto est\u00e1 creando herramientas de diagn\u00f3stico por imagen asequibles y f\u00e1ciles de usar para ayudar a los m\u00e9dicos a detectar las lesiones cerebrales en los beb\u00e9s prematuros de forma m\u00e1s precoz y precisa.
